Privacy Policy
Last updated: 12 June 2026
The short version: the only personal data this website collects is what you choose to send us through the contact form — your name, email address and message. We use it solely to reply to you. We use privacy-friendly, cookie-free visitor statistics that can't identify you, we don't set cookies, and we don't sell or share your data with anyone for marketing.
01Who we are
SME Intelligence is run by Peter Styles, based near Dumfries, Scotland. For the purposes of UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018), Peter Styles trading as SME Intelligence is the data controller for any personal data collected through this website.
If you have any questions about this policy or how your data is handled, contact us at info@smeintelligence.co.uk.
02What we collect and why
When you submit the contact form on this website, we collect:
- Your name
- Your email address
- The service you're interested in (optional)
- Your message (optional)
We use this information for one purpose only: to respond to your enquiry and, if you become a client, to communicate with you about the work. The lawful basis for this processing is our legitimate interest in responding to enquiries you have chosen to send us.
If you email us directly at info@smeintelligence.co.uk, we handle that correspondence in the same way.
03How the contact form works
Form submissions are delivered to our inbox by FormSubmit (formsubmit.co), a third-party form-relay service. When you press send, your form details pass through FormSubmit's servers on their way to our email. FormSubmit acts as a data processor; you can read their privacy practices on their website.
Your form data is not stored in any database on this website — it exists only as the email we receive.
04The AI assistant
This website includes an AI chat assistant (the chat bubble in the corner of the homepage). When you use it, the messages you type are sent to Anthropic (anthropic.com), the AI provider whose model generates the replies, acting as a data processor. Under the commercial API terms we use, Anthropic does not use these messages to train its AI models.
We do not store your chat conversations on our server — only anonymous usage counts, to keep the demo from being overused. Please don't type personal or sensitive information into the chat; if you want to tell us about your project, the contact form is the right place.
05Cookies and analytics
This website sets no cookies — there is nothing here for a cookie banner to warn you about.
To understand how many people visit the site, we use GoatCounter (goatcounter.com), a privacy-friendly analytics service. GoatCounter does not use cookies, does not track you across other websites, and does not collect or store any information that could identify you personally. It records only aggregate statistics — such as which pages are viewed, the referring site, browser type, screen size and country. IP addresses are used briefly to derive non-identifying statistics and are not stored.
06Hosting and server logs
This website and our email are hosted by IONOS in their European data centres. Like virtually all web hosts, IONOS may keep standard technical server logs (such as IP addresses and pages requested) for security and operational purposes. We do not use these logs to identify visitors.
07How long we keep your data
We keep enquiry emails for as long as is needed to deal with your enquiry and any work that follows from it. If your enquiry doesn't lead anywhere, the correspondence is simply deleted in routine inbox housekeeping. We don't add you to mailing lists, and you won't receive marketing from us unless you've specifically asked for something.
08Who we share data with
We never sell or rent your personal data. The only third parties involved are the service providers named above — FormSubmit (form delivery), IONOS (hosting and email) and GoatCounter (anonymous visitor statistics) — and only to the extent needed to provide this website and deliver your message to us.
09Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:
- Access — ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate data
- Erasure — ask us to delete your data
- Restriction — ask us to limit how we use your data
- Objection — object to our processing of your data
- Portability — receive your data in a portable format
To exercise any of these rights, email info@smeintelligence.co.uk. We'll respond within one month.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you also have the right to complain to the UK's data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), at ico.org.uk.
10Changes to this policy
If we change how this website handles personal data — for example, by changing analytics provider or adding new tools — we'll update this policy and the "last updated" date at the top of this page.
